I personally love all the Maiden albums, but you are correct the vocals are really buried in the mix. I actually think the vocals stand out better on Brave New World than on the latest Maiden album, A Matter of Life and Death. Even with washed out vocals they are pretty impressive albums. If you get a chance check out my blog at http://progressive-metal-xone.blog and the article "Metal with Meaning". If you like Bruce, I think you really need to hear Russell Allen of Symphony X.
